Think About It...Do You Mind?
One of the saddest addictions that I'm aware of is the addiction to negative thoughts. Just as drug or alcohol addiction destroys those poor souls who are caught in its terrible grip. Negative thinking will rob its victim of happiness, self-esteem and the Love of those who suffer at the hands of the addict.
It is inconceivable that one who loves God would allow drug or alcohol to control their daily activities; and yet we can all site examples of men and women who have been captured by these tools of Satan.
Those who are addicts are not the only victims. Husbands, wives, children, parents, and friends all suffer when they are in contact with someone that is not able to control such destructive behavior.
Those who suffer addictions have difficulty seeing themselves as a part of the problem. Their ability to shift responsibility makes it hard for them to face the reality of how bad their habit is and how much it hurts the ones they love. Often they will not face up to their problem until they lose the respect and affection of those they most care about.
People who have developed the habit of harsh and critical judgement often leave many scared victims in their wake as they sail through life. A hateful word flies from their lips and pierces a tender heart. The whip of constant criticism lashes the backs of those close by, and leave torn flesh that will always be marked by scars.
When the addict is sober they often experience a deep sorrow for the pain that has been inflicted. They want to do whatever they can to make up for the pain. Unless they have a change of heart that leads to a change of behavior, they will soon slip back into the same destructive pattern.
Negative thinking is a correctable habit. Just as one can overcome other addiction, one can overcome the destructive forces of always seeing a glass half empty. Here are two scriptures that will help.
- Philippians 4:8, "Brothers (sisters to) whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praise worthy think about such things."
- Ephesians 4:29, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
